London is a leading global city comprising of 32 boroughs, with London Docklands stretching almost 9 square miles between Tower Bridge and Woolwich, making up part of the boroughs of Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Lewisham, Newham and Greenwich.

Originally part of the Port of London, once the World’s largest port, the London Docklands were eventually closed by 1980, a result of a new cargo transportation system adopted by the shipping industry that the London docks simply couldn’t accommodate.

Since the closure of the docks, redevelopment plans have been in place and the area has been transformed. Part of this regeneration includes that seen in Canary Wharf over recent years including development of housing, improvements to transport and the transformation of the waterfront.

Other major developments in the Docklands include the construction and opening of Limehouse Link road tunnel between the Docklands and the City of London, built in order to improve transport to and from the City, and costing £293 million. Others include those in the Royal Docks, such as the City airport, University of East London and Thames Barrier Park. Upcoming developments include the Royal Business Park, Silvertown Quays, the Royal Quay and the Minoco Wharf.

These developments have made the area even more desirable over the years, with the development of Canary Wharf providing an area to live and work that has excellent connections to Central London, and an array of shops, restaurants and bars, as well as green areas. Greenwich and Deptford are also currently undergoing major redevelopment, with improved transport links and construction of luxury flats making the area more and more attractive to both investors and those looking for a place to live.

Docklands estate agents deal with such a wide range of property types, as the vast area covered includes properties suitable for all budgets, that there is something for everyone, including luxury flats and apartments with stunning river views.
